LGBTQIA representation
The world that is depicted in the media does not reflect the diversity of our world. Not only is there a lack of visibility for people of color, but there is an even larger lack of visibility for LGBTQIA people of color. Since LGBTQIA people of color are members of two groups that have been historically oppressed. You can be fired for being gay in 29 states, and you can be fired for being transgender in 34 states. People of color already have fewer employment opportunities to begin with, so the lack of visibility for LGBTQIA people of color in the media is twice compounded.
32% of children raised by gay male black couples live in poverty, compared to 13% of children raised by married heterosexual black parents and 7% of children raised by married heterosexual white parents. We need more representation of LGBTQIA people of color in the media in order to foster acceptance and raise awareness of the problems that face members of these groups. However, 74% of LGBTQIA characters on primetime television are white.
Furthermore, there is a great focus on gay marriage being the marker of LGBTQIA equality, which is also very problematic.
